Senior Leadership Team
Marcus Whiteley, Chief Executive Officer
Marcus joined Harley Street Specialist Hospital having previously worked in senior roles in some of London’s best known private hospitals. He was intrinsic in helping to set their strategic aims in aligning them with the needs of their patients. He is a highly experienced leader and has successfully delivered a broad range of initiatives including the delivery of multi-million-pound projects as well as changes in organisations process management contributing significantly to the successful delivery of their qualitative and commercial KPIs. Prior to working in the private healthcare sector Marcus was employed by some of the most well-known hotels in both London and Hong Kong.
Tom Shrubshall, Director of Clinical Services
Tom has extensive clinical and operational experience having spent several years in senior clinical leadership roles within the private healthcare sector. Recently he was also involved with the education faculty at NHS Nightingale London. Tom has previously been instrumental in pioneering new technologies and patient pathways and has been involved in many world firsts within the perioperative environment. He is a strong believer for continuous professional development and is a board member for the Perioperative Care Collaborative for advancing healthcare education. With a passion for operational excellence and commitment to patient centred care, Tom works closely with the consultants and governance team to ensure the hospital continues to deliver out-standing patient care.
Catherine Okonkwo, Director of Non-Clinical Services
An established healthcare governance professional, Catherine joined Harley Street Specialist Hospital from the Department of Health and Social Care. Prior to that, she spent five years as a Care Quality Commission Hospital Inspector. In this role, she inspected over 40 London services, from large NHS Trust providers to smaller independent services. Catherine has a wealth of experience in service improvement, working alongside executive teams and regulatory compliance. As Director of Non-Clinical services, Catherine manages administration, booking and billing, facilities and governance functions. Catherine’s role is to support the delivery of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led services and to embed a culture that values good governance, quality assurance and continuous improvement.
Akeel Arshad, Director of Commercial Finance
Having graduated in 2013 with a 1st class BSc in Accounting and Management, Akeel was selected for the NHS finance graduate scheme, which entailed working across numerous NHS organisations in financial and accounting roles. He qualified in 2016 as a chartered accountant and was promoted to drive financial efficiencies in the NHS as part of the Lord Carter review. In January 2019 he decided to step into the private healthcare sector and was part of the founding team at Harley Street Specialist Hospital. Akeel’s main responsibilities are ensuring a robust finance structure including day to day operational activities and supporting the board with strategic financial decisions.
Dr Carlos Kidel, Medical Director
Dr Kidel has been the Medical Director of Harley Street Specialist Hospital since September 2020. He is a consultant anaesthetist and has extensive experience working in many NHS and private hospitals in Central London. Dr Kidel still holds a full-time substantive post as a consultant anaesthetist in a large London Teaching Hospital. Patient safety and quality are key passions for Dr Kidel, and he continues to lead and deliver quality improvement projects within Harley Street Specialist Hospital, drawing on his experiences from both the public and independent sector. He also holds a senior post within Health Education England as a training programme director for the Central London area.
Ali Noorani, President and Chairman
Leading the original team who acquired the hospital, Mr Ali Noorani is also a senior Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital at Barts Health NHS Trust, a tertiary referral centre for complex upper limb patients and the biggest trauma centre in Europe. He has an international practice based in London, UAE and Pakistan and remains dedicated to further research and ongoing development in his field. In addition to his post as President and Chairman of Harley Street Specialist Hospital, Mr Noorani holds the positions of Medical Director and Chairman for Orthopaedic Specialists; Co- Founder of The Regenerative Clinic; Chief Medical Advisor for JS Healthcare Division and CEO of Next AI.
Simon Checkley, Strategic Director
After graduating from University with a degree in Biology, Simon started his career selling medical devices – laparoscopic instruments in theatre for Johnson and Johnson. His next major employer was Stryker, where he developed his orthopaedic experience. Starting as the Business Unit Director for the UK Trauma team and eventually progressing to run Stryker Spine, CMF and Orthobiologics for Stryker Europe. After these major corporate experiences, Simon, went on to become an entrepreneur in the medical sector, starting companies in the healthcare industry. He was part of the founding team which acquired Harley Street Specialist Hospital, where he currently holds the position of strategic director.
