Consultant in Oral Medicine

Dr Barbara Carey is a Consultant in Oral Medicine. She completed her undergraduate dental degree at University College Cork and undergraduate medical degree at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and has worked in a variety of acute hospital and community dental and medical settings. She obtained her FDS(OM) and FFD(Oral Medicine) of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2018. Having completed her specialty training in London, in 2019, she became substantive consultant in Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

As a specialist in oral medicine, she specialises in the diagnosis and management of patients with lichen planus, oral ulceration, pigmented lesions, potentially malignant disorders, dry mouth, lumps and bumps, oral manifestations of systemic conditions, infections, and orofacial pain (burning mouth syndrome, temporomandibular disorder, trigeminal neuralgia).

She has also obtained her Fellowship to the Higher Education Authority (2017) and is a member of the Faculty of Dental Trainers, RCSEdin. She is involved in the training of specialty registrars in oral medicine as assigned clinical and educational supervisor. Currently, she is an examiner for ISFE, ORE and MFDS examinations. Barbara contributes regularly to academic publications (orcid.org/0000-0002-6376-9867).

She is current Treasurer of the British and Irish Society of Oral Medicine and current Region 1 (UK and Ireland) representative of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2018-present).
