Dr Ronald van Heerwaarden MD PhD has gained an international reputation as a consultant orthopaedic and specialist knee surgeon with unrivalled expertise in knee joint preservation surgery, limb deformity correction and knee osteotomy.  Based in the Netherlands, Abu Dhabi and London, his practice is focused solely on these key areas. Widely-published and renowned for his innovations in both new surgical techniques and instruments, he also lectures regularly on his specialism.

Dr van Heerwaarden gained his medical degree from the Free University of Amsterdam, before undertaking his specialist training in orthopaedics under the guidance of Professor René Marti at Amsterdam’s Academical Medical Centre. After setting up his orthopaedic practice at the Sint Maartensclinics, he founded and led the Netherlands-based Limb Reconstruction Centre and the Limb Deformity Reconstruction Units for 13 years.

Since 2016, he has held the post of specialist consultant in knee osteotomy at Abu Dhabi’s International Knee and Joint Centre, and in the same year, set up a Centre for Deformity Correction and Joint Preserving Surgery at Kliniek ViaSana, Mill in the Netherlands.

His reputation for forging groundbreaking techniques means that surgeons travel from every corner of the globe to watch him operate to better understand his technique and surgical innovations, such as the invention of surgical technique details, plates for the fixation after performing an osteotomy and the use of the knee joint distraction frame.
