Pain Management Specialist

Dr Ramaswamy MBBS MD FRCA FFPMRCA EDRA Cer Cli Res is a consultant in Anaesthesia, pain management and neuromodulation based at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital. He heads the postgraduate and undergraduate education at Bart’s Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London and is the lead pain management clinician for the Newham Musculoskeletal Service (MSK) collaboration. He is also an honorary visiting senior lecturer and Pain Management MSc director at the University of Edinburgh.

Having achieved his medical doctorate in anaesthesia as a medal scholar from a leading Indian postgraduate medical educational centre, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, he went on to train on the South East Scotland rotation. He gained his Certificate of Specialist Training in anaesthesia and pain management in 2014 and undertook an Advanced Pain Fellowship in London, at Imperial Healthcare.

Vastly experienced in managing acute and chronic pain, his daily workload includes working with both outpatients and inpatients, holding clinics, and conducting complex pain ward rounds, treating a wide variety of conditions such as neck pain, back pain, post-surgical pain, headache, facial pain, chronic musculoskeletal (including fibromyalgia) and neuropathic pain, abdomen-pelvic pain, sports injuries, cancer pain and whiplash.

Dr Ramaswamy’s treatment plans are always tailored to each patient’s specific needs and he believes in educating patients about their condition so that they can self-manage their pain in the longer term where possible. At consultations, he will advise on pain-relieving medications and on appropriate interventions. Where necessary, he will consult with other specialists in the multidisciplinary team, such as physiotherapists, psychologists or spinal and orthopaedic surgeons, so patients can benefit from the expertise of a wider team.

He is an expert in a wide range of pain interventions and anaesthetic procedures including: X-ray and ultrasound-guided interventions, epidural/root block, cervical and lumbar facet joint/medial branch injections, radiofrequency treatment to medial branch/nerve roots or peripheral nerves, complex pain interventions e.g. splanchnic nerve block, advanced laser therapies, regenerative medicine techniques and neuromodulation.
