BMBS FRCS (Orth)

Consultant Orthopaedic Hip & Knee Surgeon

Mr Duncan Whitwell BMBS FRCS (Orth) is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who enjoys a global reputation as a hip and knee and orthopaedic oncology specialist. Complex joint replacement revision cases are referred to him and he has pioneered advanced reconstructive techniques in hip and knee joint replacement and orthopaedic oncology.

A Nottingham University graduate, Mr Whitwell trained at Bristol Royal Infirmary before joining the Oxford Region Orthopaedic Training Scheme. In 2004, he studied on the Queensland Orthopaedic Oncology Fellowship.

He performs around 300 hip and knee joint replacements annually, with approximately 100 of these procedures being problematic cases from other revision specialists in the south of England, requiring advanced bone and soft tissue reconstruction techniques.

Mr Whitwell has developed a tertiary referral practice for complex revision joint replacements that need advanced reconstructive techniques for large bone loss. Overseas surgeons are regular observers and Mr Whitwell has performed complex orthopaedic operations internationally by invitation.

He is a lead consultant at The Oxford Sarcoma Service, a leading centre for the treatment of rare musculoskeletal disorders and chairs the Sarcoma Tumour Group (TSSG). He lectures on sarcoma and skeletal metastatic disease and co-chairs a national Metal Hip Research Group, which coordinates research into the cause of early failure of metal on metal bearings.

A renowned speaker and educator, he is Honorary Senior Lecturer at St Peters College, Oxford and Senior Lecturer on the UK Miller Orthopaedic Review Course held in Oxford each year. In 2012, he represented the British Orthopaedic Association on the ABC fellowship tour of the USA’s premier orthopaedic departments and currently runs two fellowships: one in the UK and an international fellowship. He also organises seven annual oncology courses in Africa and Southern Asia.
