He has been a consultant for over 10 years and his NHS practice is based at University Hospital Southampton. He holds the Human Tissue Authority License at Southampton enabling the department to perform Cartilage Transplantation in the knee.

Mr Datta has performed multiple clinical trials and has a special interest in developing joint preservation techniques, using bone marrow-derived stem cells, and human cartilage cells. These procedures can be performed via keyhole surgery in the hip and knee joints. They can also be combined with re-alignment in the knee to produce biological joint replacement.
