Mr Ravi Ray
MBBS, FRCS, Dip SEM, PG Cert
Consultant Orthopaedic & Specialist Upper limb Surgeon
Mr Ravi Ray has the pleasure and privilege of being an upper limb orthopaedic surgeon who looks after medical needs of his patients who have troubles from collarbone to fingertips.
He conducts himself professionally but maintains a degree of warmth, approachability and respect melded with humour and experience.
His main focus is on sports injuries to include tendonitis, tendon tears, dislocating shoulders, painful elbows, wrists and hands and trapped nerves. He is also highly competent with joint replacements of the shoulder, doing roughly four times the national average.
The experiences he gained with the London Irish rugby football club and England boxing allow him to understand the needs of the sports person as well as the needs of the less active patient.
Mr Ray’s main practice lies in Essex and he continues to provide emergency care to trauma patients from cradle to grave with Basildon Hospital as his NHS base.
He lectures at the Anglia Ruskin University in Essex and examines medical students from UCL.
Having looked after junior doctors training within his department for five years, he plays an active role in hospital management for the betterment of his colleagues and his department.
He made tremendous strides almost immediately after arriving at Basildon Hospital and was quickly nominated and awarded Doctor of the Year, moving on to act as the host of the awards ceremonies for the next few years.
Mr Ray is the lead for the shoulder and elbow team across three hospitals with regular multi disciplinary meetings and chairs a regional meeting of colleagues regularly discussing complex cases.
His innovative practice has seen the introduction of a virtual fracture clinic to Basildon Hospital, triaging over 50 cases in one morning, attracting much local and regional media attention and a BBC Essex radio interview. With remote consulting, he was able to maintain patient contact during the toughest times over the last two years.
Mr Ray is at the forefront of pioneering practice with a recent introduction of collagen patches contributing to rotator cuff tendon repairs.
He has recently published articles of a medical nature which have been presented at international conferences as well as educational and informative pieces for the Evening Standard and the Saturday Daily Mail.
He maintains an excellent work life balance through his cycling, golf and travelling. All of this would only be achievable with a strong family support network which he values immensely.
Mr Ray also offers a ‘one stop clinic’. This allows the patient to receive an initial consultation, imaging and steroid injection on the same day. Mr Ray would be offering this service at HSSH with Dr Qaiser Malik. Both Consultants offer injections administered in outpatient and ultrasound guided injections. This clinic has been very successful in Essex, minimising patient visits to the hospital and allowing for diagnosis and treatment at the first consultation.
