linkedin

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Rupen Dattani BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCS, MD, FRCS (Tr & Orth), specialises in treating shoulder and elbow conditions and orthopaedic trauma. Dedicated and experienced, he enjoys the challenges that his sub-speciality presents and finds it particularly rewarding to restore patients to a good quality of life after injury. Where possible he uses non-operative treatments such as physiotherapy or injections and when surgery is necessary favours minimally invasive techniques to achieve the best outcome.

After graduating in medicine from the University of Wales, Mr Dattani trained in orthopaedics on the South West Thames specialist registrar programme. He achieved his medical doctorate (MD) in orthopaedics at University College London and enhanced his skills on two highly sought-after shoulder and elbow fellowships with eminent surgeons:  the first, working alongside Mr Graham Tytherleigh-Strong in Cambridge, and the second, with Professor Ofer Levy at the globally reputed Reading Shoulder Unit. In addition, Mr Dattani undertook a trauma fellowship at a Level I trauma centre in Vancouver.

As a result of the techniques he mastered on these fellowships, Mr Dattani has honed his expertise in keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery for the shoulder and elbow, together with joint replacement (arthroplasty) surgery as well as shoulder and elbow fracture surgery.

He is excited by the latest innovations in his field and believes that it is only through high-quality research that the boundaries of treatment can be further advanced. His own key research focus is on the assessment of patients’ outcomes after shoulder surgery.

A member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England & Edinburgh and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, Mr Dattani has authored a book for the teaching and training of surgeons, contributed book chapters to orthopaedics textbooks and had more than 35 articles published in peer-reviewed journals. He has also showcased his work both domestically and overseas.
