Mr Thomas Hester BSc (Hons) MBBS MRCS MSc (T&O) is a dedicated, caring and innovative consultant orthopaedic surgeon who holds the position of Trauma Lead at University Hospital Lewisham.

In 2005, Mr Hester gained a first-class Bachelor of Science degree with Honours from University College London (UCL) and won the Scales Prize for Orthopaedic Science. In 2006, he qualified from St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine with Distinction before going on to achieve a Master’s degree with Honours at the University of Brighton in Trauma & Orthopaedics (MSc (T&O)).

After spending a period on the South East London Training Rotation to finish his orthopaedic training, he travelled to Canada where he enhanced his knowledge on a British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Visiting Foot & Ankle Fellowship and a British Orthopaedic Society Travelling Fellowship specialising in Complex Trauma, in Toronto and Calgary respectively. He also undertook a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

His area of expertise is treating foot and ankle disorders such as: ankle fractures, heel pain, cartilage damage, bunions and ligament injuries, and where surgery is required, he favours using arthroscopic (minimally invasive) techniques.

Widely published in medical journals and books, he is passionate about research and innovation, and being IT-oriented, has created a surgical app and companion online training resource.  He is also currently collaborating in several notable research projects.

Mr Hester has attended many professional courses and is active in both undergraduate and postgraduate training. When he travelled to Guatemala on the Broken Earth Medical Mission, he was able to put advanced trauma (ATLS) principles into practice in a tough, real world situation.
