Professor Arun Ranganathan MBBS, MRCS, PGDip (Orth Engin), DM, FRCS (TrandOrth) is globally renowned and recognised as the UK’s leading spinal surgeon. He operates on royalty, professional sportspeople and international dignitaries and achieved a world first when performing live spinal surgery on UK TV’s Channel 5. He has earnt the soubriquet ‘the surgeon’s surgeon’ because other surgeons choose him to operate on them due to his excellent success, safety, and early recovery records. An award-winning researcher and sought-after speaker, author, and teacher, he currently holds two honorary professorial roles.

Following surgical training at Nottingham, London, Leeds and Newcastle, Professor Ranganathan was chosen for spinal fellowships under top consultants, Dr Stephen Lewis and Professor Michael Fehlings, on the AO North America Advanced Spine fellowship. His research awards include: a doctorate in spinal surgery (University of Nottingham); ISSL best global spinal research award x 2; Britspine Award for Best Spinal Research and the Spine Society of Australia award for best international research.

Aged just 35, he founded the paediatric service and the new adult spinal service at Bart’s Health NHS Trust. He is an expert in minimally invasive techniques, with unrivalled experience in adult and paediatric spinal deformity, and a strong advocate of a holistic approach, setting up the multidisciplinary London Spine Care clinic.

He was chief investigator of PRESTO (Pragmatic Randomised Evaluation of Stable Thoracolumbar Fracture Treatment Outcomes) and is one of only a few UK spinal surgeons to be awarded a National Institute of Health Sciences Research (NIHR) Grant.

Professor Ranganathan collaborates with charities to pioneer improvements to spinal surgery in Asia and has operated all over that continent. Dedicated to innovation, he has an active interest in the development of virtual and augmented reality devices, robotics and navigation and new implants and instrumentation.
