Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Professor Nicola Maffulli MD, MS, PhD, FRCP, FRCS(Orth) is internationally renowned for pioneering surgical techniques and his prolific authorship and research. Honorary Professor for Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University, he specialises in orthopaedics for both adults and children, joint replacement, hand and rheumatoid surgery and sports trauma injury. In 2012, he realised a lifelong dream when leading the foot and ankle surgical team at the London Olympics.
In 1983, Professor Maffulli qualified from the University of Napoli Medical School, Italy, working at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute before becoming Clinical Lecturer in Sports Medicine at the University of London. He was Orthopaedic Registrar on the North East Thames Rotation in 1991 before taking a Senior Registrar post at the University of Aberdeen the following year.
In 1996, he returned to Aberdeen as Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics, after a spell in Hong Kong as an Associate Professor in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. In 1997 he gained experience as an ESSKA Sports Medicine Travelling Fellow and as an ABC Travelling Fellow in 1998.
The world’s most published and referenced orthopaedic surgeon, he has authored over 1,200 articles, edited several textbooks, currently edits two leading journals, and has written Platelet Rich Plasma in Musculoskeletal Practice, the first book on using platelet rich plasma in musculoskeletal medicine.
Many of the 40 revolutionary surgical techniques he has described have now become standard practice and his commitment to research means he brings cutting edge techniques to his clinical practice to deliver optimum results.
He has been dubbed ‘King of Tendons’ because of his dedication to researching soft tissues issues and is participating in several multidisciplinary research projects in sports medicine. He was the Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Keele University School of Medicine before being appointed Chair and Chief of Service of The Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London. He is the President of the Italian Society of Muscles Ligaments and Tendons, a former President of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association, and sits on many committees in Sports Medicine and in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
