Professor Roger van Riet

Professor van Riet received his medical degree from the University of Antwerp in 2001. Prior to this he completed a bachelor in physiotherapy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands and worked as a physiotherapist in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Following medical school, Professor van Riet was a research fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN (2001-2002) after which he started his orthopaedic training at the University of Antwerp. He completed his PhD in 2004, from research on the radial head performed at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Antwerp. He was an Upper extremity fellow at Monash University, Melbourne (2005) and the Royal Adelaide Hospital (2006) in Australia and again at the Mayo Clinic in 2008.

Since 2008 he has been working as an elbow surgeon and fellowship director at AZ Monica, Orthopaedic Centre Antwerp. He is a former member of the Institutional review Board and later the Medical board of the hospital.

Professor van Riet has published over 100 peer reviewed papers on elbow surgery and more than 50 book chapters. He is the Associate Editor at Shoulder & Elbow, Clinics in Orthopaedic Surgery and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery EST. He has presented his work at all major upper extremity meetings in the world. He was a guest speaker at Harvard Sports Medicine, special guest at the Mayo Clinic Elbow Course and presented grand rounds at the university of Chicago.

He was an invited speaker at the national shoulder and elbow society meetings in Hong Kong, Australia and many European countries, including the United Kingdom. Professor van Riet organised the European Shoulder and Elbow Society (SECEC) Antwerp Elbow Course and SECEC Closed meeting in Antwerp in 2016. To date, he has organized the Antwerp Upper limb Cadaver Course five times.

Professor van Riet was the first president of the Belgian Elbow and Shoulder Society and a current member of the board. He is a former member of the elbow committee of both ISAKOS and ESSKA. He is the former chair of the SECEC Rehab Committee and currently, he is the chair of the Healthcare delivery Committee of SECEC and member of the executive committee.

He is a consultant at the Antwerp University Hospital and a guest professor of Orthopaedics and traumatology at the University of Antwerp. As a dedicated elbow surgeon, he performs approximately 900 elbow surgeries every year.
