Living with pain can be life limiting. We know that whether pain is acute (triggered by another condition, or because of trauma or injury) or if it is chronic pain (lasting 3 months or more) the impact on a person’s life is tremendous. Creating proper solutions for alleviating or managing pain is critical for emotional wellbeing. Taking real action can influence a positive state of mind, which studies have shown to assist in better outcomes for managing long term pain.
Living with pain
The purpose of pain within the body has a positive role. Pain is a warning signal that has evolved over millennia to make people aware of danger. There are pain receptors in skin, organs and nerves that detect danger and send an urgent message to the brain. An instantaneous reflex action will move the body part away from danger. This process makes links with physical reaction, thoughts and emotions.
Pain is prevalent. It is believed that currently in the UK, one third of all adults suffer with lower back pain. Around 20% of these people seek advice from their GP*. This equates to around 2.6 million patients every year**.
