Mr Matija Krkovic

After I completed specialist training in General and Orthopaedic Trauma surgery in 2001, I undertook several sub-specialist fellowships in Germany and Switzerland where I learned from world-class surgeons. I then went on to complete my PhD at the University Medical Centre of Ljubljana in 2006. I have been working in the NHS since 2007 as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon and I now work at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, which is part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Most recently, I completed osseointegration for amputees training in Germany and USA, which I am now offering in the UK.

My expertise is in treating patients who have experienced significant trauma to the lower extremities, with a special emphasis on complex injuries and post traumatic sequelae of the lower leg. My main areas of expertise are managing bone defects either after trauma or infections, managing deformities including limb lengthening for post traumatic and cosmetic reasons and non-unions including infected non-unions. Most notably, I managed the catastrophic injuries of Mr Ian Hutchinson, the professional motorcycle road racer, which allowed him to return to competitive racing and go on to win the Isle of Man TT festival in 2015.

I developed a special interest in bone infections. Collaboration with plastic surgeons and Infectious diseases consultants allowed me to improve the results significantly, which has resulted in multiple publications.

In my elective practice, I focus on knee arthroplasties (total knee replacements) and revision knee arthroplasties.
